Making a Man explores the confines and problems that surround masculinity in western culture. The popular understanding of masculinity expects men to be dominant, devalue women and suppress their emotions. My project argues that this toxic aspect of masculinity which is often expected of and enacted by men in western culture is detrimental and should be challenged and expanded.
Through taking portraits of men, the aim for this project is to challenges a narrow idea of masculinity, demonstrating the complex and multifaceted nature of ‘being a man’. No two portraits are the same, just as no two men will experience masculinity in the same way.
