Eighteen Stairs

Shibati, or 'Eighteen Stairs', is a 38 million square-metre slum situated in the heavily populated Chongqing in South West China. Formerly the central-hub of the city, Shibati has since been replaced by the glamorous down-town district only one block away, leaving the 7000 residents to live in the shadow of its former years, as neighbouring cities receive the financial boom Shibati requires.

This series focuses on a small section of those residents, photographed within the comfort of their own homes, where many of them will live out the rest of their days.
