A Hyena In A Petticoat

As a woman living in a 21st century capitalist society I feel frustrated by the pre-existing frameworks that I feel oppress me not only as an artist but also as a woman. I am concerned by many of the outdated taboos I encounter in daily life and the unachievable standards of beauty perpetuated throughout the media and advertising.

I cannot yet accept the notion that women and men are now equal and this series of photomontages analyses the aspects that indicate there is still widespread gender inequality. It also looks back through the different waves of feminism to reflect on the origin of causes and effects that have resulted in this moment right now.

Each montage is also titled with a quote that illustrates absurd uses of language in reference to women over the centuries, which also talks about the social status of women at the time.

'Cats do not go to heaven, Women cannot write the plays of Shakespeare'.

‘Feminism…encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians'.

‘Their ideas may be babyish, but at least they have some'.

‘Everyone says the world would be better off if it was run by women. Sure, maybe there wouldn't be violence and territorial conquests fuelled by male testosterone. But instead, we'd have a bunch of jealous countries that aren't talking to each other’.

'After Eve Unearthed'.

‘You’re a woman, shave like one’.

‘Voting Tory will cause your wife to have bigger breasts’.
